Johann Sebastian Bach wrote six suites for solo cello during the 1720’s. He was able to do so at this time because he was employed at the court of Anhalt-Cothen and, unlike in his previous or subsequent positions, both of which required him to provide copious amounts of functional sacred music, he could focus his efforts on freer, secular and instrumental works. His output at Cothen included, along with the cello suites, the Brandenburg Concerti, some of the solo lute music, the solo flute sonatas and the violin partitas and sonatas. No autograph of the six cello suites in Bach’s hand is extant but there are four MSS from the period. Among these, the copy made by Anna Magdalena Bach is widely considered to be the accurate, urtext version.
