As the "Father of the Pianoforte," Clementi was a strong and vocal promoter of the instrument. He was a master of many musical trades including performer, composer, publisher, teacher, arranger, and instrument maker. He traveled extensively throughout Europe, collecting and publishing sheet music, including works by Beethoven, while selling pianos he built. He also taught a good many students, and some of these went on to teach great composers of the next generation like Chopin and Mendelssohn.
Among Clementi's compositions are sixty sonatas for pianoforte, and a great collection of Etudes called Gradus ad Parnassum. French composer Debussy's piece "Doctor Gradus ad Parnassum" (the first movement of his Children's Corner Suite) makes playful allusions to Clementi's collection of Etudes.
Clementi's sonatinas, especially this one C major, are very popular with piano students everywhere.
